Channing's path to Nirvana started in 1985 when he joined a band called Stonecrow with future Nirvana guitarist Jason Everman, whom he'd known since fifth grade. Later, while working as a sauté cook on Bainbridge Island, Washington, he formed Tick-Dolly-Row with Ben Shepherd, who would become Soundgarden's bassist. That band shared a bill with Nirvana (then called Bliss), and soon after, a mutual friend introduced Channing to Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, who were looking for a drummer. In June 1988, just weeks after joining, Nirvana recorded their first single "Love Buzz" for Sub Pop. The *Bleach* sessions ran from Christmas Eve 1988 to late January 1989, with Channing on drums except for "Floyd the Barber" and "Paper Cuts," which featured Melvins drummer Dale Crover. In April 1990, Nirvana recorded eight songs at Smart Studios with producer Butch Vig, but creative differences led to Channing's departure by mutual decision after the April–May 1990 tour. Dave Grohl replaced him, adapting some of Channing's drum parts for songs recorded before his departure. The Smart version of "Polly" with Channing on percussion appeared on *Nevermind*, though he wasn't credited until the deluxe reissue.
